Question:
What inspires you to come up with simple decorating ideas for lunch or dinner parties?
Ingrid's Answer:
The need to get together with friends and family to have fun. That always means a pretty table... so that's really the inspiration. Obviously the most important part is to keep it simple so you can enjoy your own party or dinner.
Question:
Ingrid, what will you be baking for your special someone for Valentine's Day?
Ingrid's Answer:
I am leaning towards the DOVE® chocolate mousse.
Question:
Instead of candles, what can I use to add a romantic ambiance?
Ingrid's Answer:
For me...flowers are always what I find most romantic. You can use rose petals to decorate, and candy, of course. And some vases, bud vases or shot glasses filled with red M&M'S®. Perhaps you can spell the name of your loved one with candy on top of the bed sheet?
Lately I have embarked on a total pink M&M'S® kick. What I do is get M&M'S® in baby pink, in a pearlized pink and in magenta, and have filled little bowls with each color placed around the table. It looks very pretty if you add bud vases with pink and purple flowers to make it different, instead of the typical red.

Question:
We are having a fiesta party and a piñata, any ideas what we can fill it will that is edible — but not candy?
Ingrid's Answer:
Popcorn. Try some nuts, too. Also, those little cheeses that come in individual wrappers.
Question:
I've seen the green M&M'S® in the stores and they are so cute! How can I use them to decorate a dessert while still keeping it Valentine's-like?
Ingrid's Answer:
Use it to decorate anything in the shape of a heart. Or do a green and red Valentine's Day.
Question:
I want to bake a dessert for my boyfriend on Valentine's Day but he's not a big chocolate fan, what do you suggest?
Ingrid's Answer:
A fun one is a Tres Leches Cake, which has been posted on BrightIdeas.com. Very easy, and it's a lot of fun. It's actually a shortcut Tres Leches, not a long version.
Question:
Love your show! I learn so much from you. My best friend is going through a tough breakup and I want to cheer her up. Any advice for Valentine's Day — without making it too obvious?
Ingrid's Answer:
Thank you so much. It's always a pleasure to know that people get things out of watching the show. Getting together with a few of your best friends on that difficult day and doing a singles party is a good idea. Maybe find out what her favorite cookies are and make them for her. Making her some comfort food will always help. Keeping her busy, and a good hug!
Question:
Ingrid, what do you suggest for a guy who can't bake?
Ingrid's Answer:
The DOVE® chocolate mousse or Fondue for Two. They're very easy to do, and everyone will think you're a top chef!
Question:
I need help. My best friend's mother passed away one year ago this Valentine's Day. This past year has been a rough one for her, especially since her mom is not here to comfort her. I would like to help make this Valentine's Day one that she can celebrate her mom and the wonderful woman she was. Do you have any ideas that may help me?
Ingrid's Answer:
Make mom's favorite cookie recipes. Make them together and possibly give them away with a pretty little note "in memory of" to your best friends. Or perhaps "celebrating mom's favorite cookie today, from me to you", or something to that extent. This way everyone will get a memory of mom and it'll be a pretty and sweet memory.
Question:
I love Valentine's Day and I want to do something special for my niece, but she doesn't like chocolate. Any suggestions?
Ingrid's Answer:
She would probably love the Tres Leches Cake on the website. It's playful, with Skittles on top.
Question:
I've got 3 kids and want do something special to celebrate Valentine's Day with the whole family. Any suggestions?
Ingrid's Answer:
Definitely bake something all together. The family that cooks together, stays together. You can even try Share the Secret Cupcakes on the website. There are hidden messages inside. :-) It's on BrightIdeas.com.
Question:
How can I make a Valentine's Day celebration with my single friends memorable and lighthearted?
Ingrid's Answer:
Make it about celebrating your friendship. Try doing fortune cookies, where you can take out the messages and make your own, really fun messages, and insert them.
Question:
Hi there from San Antonio. Ingrid, I've made chocolate covered strawberries with cheesecake and white chocolate drizzled on top for my fellow teachers at work. How can I jazz them up even more?
Ingrid's Answer:
Yum! That sounds good! One way I find is to take many M&M'S® and crush them, then roll them and pass them through white or dark chocolate. Or use nuts, peanuts, or anything with texture that would make for a fun bite.
Question:
Do you have to have a special kind of chocolate to make dipped strawberries?
Ingrid's Answer:
Basically the DOVE® chocolate is what I love using. We have a Fondue for Two on the website that's really versatile and you can use it for many different things. I find that DOVE® is a really high-quality chocolate.
Question:
What is your favorite dish?
Ingrid's Answer:
When it comes to sweets, anything with lots of chocolate! Sometimes when it comes to savory also… a chocolate mole, which is an authentic Mexican traditional dish. There's a very easy and simplified version in my cookbook. For dessert, try the DOVE® chocolate mousse on BrightIdeas.com. I like eating it with bananas.
Question:
What is your favorite dish from your new book?
Ingrid's Answer:
Hmmm. It's hard to pick a favorite dish from my book. In my 42 years of life, many of my favorites are in there. Arroz con Pollo is good comfort food. And also my Caribbean Salmon, which has a guava barbeque sauce. That is made on top of a bed of black beans and mango with veggies. And for dessert, it would be my churros with some melted DOVE® chocolate, which is in the book too.
Question:
My boyfriend loves white chocolate. Any fun dessert ideas using white chocolate?
Ingrid's Answer:
You can do a white chocolate fondue and have an assortment of all different fruits to dip in. Also try ladyfingers and balling fruit with a melon baller and putting fruit in a glass with tall skewers. Then in the center, a bowl of white chocolate for a pretty presentation. You could also have marshmallows, and cubed brownies.
Question:
I love peanut butter but I want to serve a sophisticated dessert for a dinner party I'm having next week. What do you suggest?
Ingrid's Answer:
You can make meringue, and mix the topping when baking with a some peanut butter and crushed peanuts. Spread over the cooked meringue topping, cook a bit more. And then let it cool. You can serve it with a scoop of ice cream. There is also a Peanut Butter Munchies recipe on BrightIdeas.com which looks really elegant.
Question:
Can you bake cupcakes in ice cream cones?
Ingrid's Answer:
Yes you can. You pretty much follow the system...start by using flat-bottomed ice cream cones. Crumble aluminum foil and wrap around the bottom of each cone. This will make sure that the cone stays standing up. Place them in a muffin pan. Pour the cake mix evenly, filling the cones halfway. Then bake for 15-20 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Let them cool, and then frost. And then eat!
Question:
Why are my sugar cookies looking all bubbly after I cook them? I want a smooth surface.
Ingrid's Answer:
Probably undercooked. All ovens work differently, so you have to bake them longer, probably, than what you have been doing, and at a lower temperature. You might also want to have your oven calibrated. Sometimes that might cost a lot of money, so a good alternative is to buy a separate oven thermometer, then place it inside of the oven, to check to see if that is the same as what your oven temperature shows.
Question:
When should I use real vanilla extract and when is it okay to use imitation extract?
Ingrid's Answer:
NEVER imitation for me personally. What's the point of saving a few pennies, when the real has great flavor and doesn't taste fake. With a good recipe you'll take away the greatness by using imitation. It's a synthetic substance...why have that when you can have the real thing that's organic and healthy, with great flavor?
Question:
Can I use egg substitute instead of real eggs in my cookies?
Ingrid's Answer:
Most of them, generally, yes. It might depend from recipe to recipe, but mostly yes. If the recipe calls for leavening, in that case, don't do a substitute. That's an indicator that the substitutes will not work.
Question:
My daughter needs to take cupcakes to class tomorrow. How can I cover the cupcakes without messing up the icing?
Ingrid's Answer:
Stick toothpicks in the tops of the cupcakes and then cover with foil. Generally when I travel with them, I take the icing separately then remove them onto a platter, which always calls for a messy, sticky situation. So if you go with your icing and piping separately, that's a good idea.
Question:
How do you melt chocolate for chocolate-dipped strawberries? Mine won't stick to the fruit! And what is the best chocolate to use? Thanks.
Ingrid's Answer:
Make sure you dry your fruit really well. DOVE® always works great for me. Either the dark or milk chocolate. Use a double-boiler, or a microwave. Be careful with the microwave, chocolate burns fast. Every 20 seconds, give it a stir. That should do it. Sometimes you can add a bit of butter too, for moisture, if needed.
Question:
I want to make a heart-shaped pizza. How do I keep the dough from losing its shape?
Ingrid's Answer:
That's a tough one. You can start by cutting a stencil out on top of wax paper. And then try cutting the dough, but it's difficult, unless you do it in a mold.
Question:
Can I add different flavorings to melted chocolate without hurting it?
Ingrid's Answer:
Depending on what you use the chocolate for, but generally, yes. You can add different extracts to give the flavoring you want. Almond, orange...
